Admission Procedures

At Wellington School, we welcome applications for places at all ages, although the most popular entry year groups for boys and girls are Year 7, Year 9 and the Sixth Form.

Do please come and visit the School.  A website and a prospectus do not show the whole picture and we thoroughly enjoy showing parents and pupils around what we consider to be a very happy place.

Senior School Admissions Process
Admission criteria vary according to age.  We would be delighted to arrange a tour of the School and a meeting with the Headmaster and also to arrange a taster day for pupils. If they wish to proceed, a registration form and fee is then requested.

Year 7 Entry:

All those wishing to enter Year 7 will take the entrance exam in the January prior to entry the following September.  The exam consists of papers in Maths, English Comprehension and English Essay. Sample papers are available.

An induction evening in the summer before starting and a day in school before the start of term give all Year 7 pupils the chance to settle, make friends and find their way around.

Year 9:

Pupils wishing to enter Year 9 and above will be examined in Maths and English and a subject of their choice from Science, Modern Languages, History, Geography or Latin.  Current school reports are requested prior to assessments. We would be delighted to arrange a tour for families, a meeting with the Headmaster and a taster day for pupils prior to the assessment date.
Sixth Form Entry:

Entry to the Sixth Form is by current school reports and predicted GCSE Grades.  Candidates require a minimum of 3 B and 3 C Grades at GCSE to enter the Sixth Form, however an A Grade at GCSE is required to study Maths or Physics at A-Level.

The only year groups where we do not admit pupils are Year 11 which is mid-way through the GCSE course and the Upper Sixth. Although theoretically it is possible to change schools during the public examination courses, we find that, in reality, it is impossible to match syllabuses. In such cases we would always recommend re-starting the GCSE or A level course, even if this does mean dropping back a year.

Prep School Admissions Process
Applications for places are accepted at all ages provided there is sufficient room within the year group and the child is old enough to join our Nursery.
Admissions to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS):
In the Nursery there is a new intake each term.  Children are eligible to join the Nursery the term after their second birthday as long as their birthday falls on or before 31 December, 31 March and 31 August.  As long as a child is old enough, children may join throughout the year if spaces are available. Children may attend on a session by session basis up to full time attendance.

Parents will then receive an invitation to bring their child for a taster session to take place in the term before they wish to start. They will also be sent a booklet to be completed at home prior to the taster day (“All About Me”). Information within the booklet will be shared during the taster day.
Admissions to Years 1 to 6
If places are available, pupils may enter at any age and time during the academic year.
On completion of an application form and payment of the required registration fee, pupils will be registered for entry at a particular date.
The school is academically selective and it reserves the right to refuse entry to those children not reaching the required standard.
Children will be invited to spend a day in an appropriate class in order to get to know their peer group by working and socialising alongside them during a normal school day.  Over the course of the day the necessary assessment will take place, which will usually be informal observations of a child’s ability and disposition.
