Weekends are an integral and busy part of the boarding experience at Wellington. All pupils are offered a range of academic, cultural, sporting and leisure based activities, and all are expected to participate in something!
This is a mixed slot consisting of academic extension work and/or broad based activities. Currently the following are offered at various times of the year:
A level tutorials
Elite Sports' Conditioning Programme
English language extension ("The Comenius society")
Mechanical Engineering ("Buggy Building Club")
Private study time in the library
Theatre production rehearsals
This is a dedicated team sports slot when the majority of school sports' fixtures are played. The sports that provide matches at this time are:
Hockey (both boys and girls teams)
The school also plays Basketball matches and takes part in competitive Swimming galas: these all happen on a weekday Monday - Friday.
This is a relatively quiet slot, but every week a bus is taken to the local cinema complex at Taunton for those who want to go. Saturday evening for others is a time to relax, talk with friends and perhaps watch some television.
Sunday morning and afternoon
Every Sunday boarding staff take optional trips to a variety of locations in the South West, and sometimes further afield. Ambitious trips out are planned roughly every 2 - 3 weeks. In 2011/12 the following trips were offered:
Bath (culture and shopping)
Clarks Village (discount shopping)
Clip and Climb in Exeter
Crealy adventure park
Cribbs Causeway (shopping)
Exeter Chiefs rugby match
Fly Fishing in Tiverton
Laser Questing in Exeter
London (shopping at Christmas time)
Millenium Stadium, Cardiff for international rugby
Paintballing at "Skirmish" in Exeter
QuayWest water park
SS Great Britain and the Bristol Docks
Somerset Cricket match
Taunton (local day out)
Water activities on the River Dart
Woodlands adventure park
At the end of every Sunday the boarding community comes together for a short chapel service of Evensong or Communion, and then spends a little time preparing for the following week.
