Wellington School welcomes students from overseas with sufficient proficiency in English to enable them to learn effectively in this country. Our students come from a range of countries including China, Hong Kong, Russia, Ukraine, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Spain, Italy and Germany.

At Wellington, we believe in integrating our students into every aspect of school life in order that they may experience the best that education in the UK can offer. Our EAL department is part of our Independent Learning Centre which is a place where students may come to undertake self-directed study or speak with one of the EAL tutors about any language issues they may have. Being a small department, tutors get to know the international students very well.

All of our international students follow a full curriculum as much as possible. After passing our pre-entry English Test, international students are assessed at the beginning of the year to decide on the best support for each individual. Lessons are generally taught on a one-to-one basis and Individual Learning Plans are put in place for each student to ensure that their own needs are met. Lessons are usually held weekly and EAL tutors liaise with subject teachers in order to provide full support.

In the Sixth Form, the role of the EAL team is to ensure that all international students meet the language requirements and have the study skills necessary for university study. We provide group IELTS training weekly for the first term, as well as one-to-one lessons. Provision is made for the IELTS test to be taken ‘in-house’ twice a year with IELTS examiners coming into the school. This has a positive effect on the students’ performance and has produced some excellent results.

In our IELTS exam last year, 12 candidates achieved their target score of 7 or above, with one candidate achieving a, 8 (9 is the maximum and is educated native speaker level).  A further 7 achieved 6.5 which are the target language conditions of their chosen Universities.
