CurriculumENGLISHThe effective use of English in spoken and written form is the foundation for all learning.  Literacy and communication are more than key life skills; they are life-enhancing. Through the English curriculum, we ensure that the teaching and learning of English is of the highest quality.  Children are introduced to a rich variety of authors and genres, experiencing them through spoken, written and multi-media forms. This layered approach encourages children to develop a depth of knowledge and excitement about the subject. Consequently, we help children enjoy and appreciate language and literature, enabling them to communicate and express themselves creatively, imaginatively and effectively. Highlights include:
MATHSIn our school, Maths is far more than a mechanical use of numbers. Logic, deduction and discussion are central to our children’s learning, enabling them to develop a network of concepts and relationships which provide a way of making sense of the world. We encourage the confidence to think beyond the obvious; predicting, hypothesising and explaining are critical skills. Children’s progress and attainment are monitored closely. Maths is used to analyse and communicate information and ideas, and to tackle a wide range of practical tasks and real life problems. We have successful learners in stimulating, practical environments, from Forest School to computer simulations. Highlights include:
SCIENCEOur children develop their scientific knowledge through a combination of practical experience, stimulating visits and workshops, combined with superb teaching. We engender curiosity, together with the development of critical and creative thinking by providing extensive opportunities for scientific investigations. Year 5 and 6 children also benefit from specialist science teaching and the use of Senior School laboratories and equipment to enrich their learning. Highlights include:
ICTICT gives each child the technical skills appropriate to their individual abilities that will enhance communication, manipulation of data and enquiry skills. At our school ICT is used across the curriculum as a tool for learning, as well as being taught as a subject in its own right. Highlights include:
DESIGN TECHNOLOGY (DT)DT stimulates both intellectual and creative abilities as well as developing personal qualities through an exciting and varied range of practical projects. It inspires children to become creative problem solvers, questioning the design and technology that surrounds them. Our inspiring, multi-sensory methods for teaching DT include in-depth analysis of simple products and their applications, use of high quality tools and materials in specialised workshops and the development of practical skills to create unique products. Highlights include:
PERSONAL, SOCIAL AND HEALTH EDUCATION (PSHE)Children are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences and to contribute fully to school and community life. In doing so, they learn to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning. They reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up and preparing for adulthood. Children also learn about the main political and social institutions that affect their lives and begin to understand their responsibilities, rights and duties. They learn to respect the diversity and differences so that they can go on to form the effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of successful life and learning. Highlights include:
School Council Children from Year 1 to Year 6 are elected by their peers and stay on the Council for the academic year. We meet twice a term and all children are given the opportunity to raise issues for discussion. Councillors then report back to their respective classes and matters raised are discussed with the Headmaster and at staff meetings. Last year we covered issues involving playground development, fundraising, clubs, re-cycling, environmental issues and much more. We have also invited various guests to our meetings to keep us up to date on different aspects of school life. Guest speakers have included the School Bursar and the Clerk of Works. Not only does the Council give the children the chance to be involved in the running of our school, it also gives them the experience of participating in a formal meeting situation.  DANCEEvery child in KS2 has the opportunity to be involved in a Key Stage production each academic year. This incorporates music, dance and drama. Opportunities abound for children across the year groups and scripts are chosen that entail a quality of performance. Full and active participation in the development of a show encourages confidence which in turn develops children’s creativity. In addition, there is an annual trip to see a West-End show. . Some highlights include:
DRAMADrama is a powerful way of engaging all children in learning across the curriculum. They use their bodies, their voices and the spaces and objects around them to investigate, understand and perform. Children can tackle concepts and ideas in drama that they might find difficult through other means.  It builds confidence and caters for the gifted and talented. Drama in Wellington Junior School’s Prep years is stranded under the headings of; drama and literacy; drama and the whole curriculum; drama, film, media and ICT; and drama for performance. Highlights include:
PEPE is a very important in combining thinking and movement skills. Children acquire and develop expertise, performing with increasing physical competence and confidence in a range of physical activities and contexts. They learn how to select and apply skills, tactics and compositional ideas to suit activities that need different approaches and ways of thinking. Children set targets for themselves and compete against others, individually and as team members. Perseverance, personal success and the acknowledgement of the success of others are paramount. Children take the initiative, lead activities, focus on improving aspects of their own performances and discover their own aptitudes and preferences for different activities. Experiences in PE enable children to make informed decisions about the importance of exercise in their lives and to develop a positive attitude to physical activity. Highlights include:
GAMESChildren have the opportunity to represent the school in many different sports. We play full fixture lists throughout the year with Hockey, Netball and Rounders for girls, and Rugby, Hockey and Cricket for boys. In addition to these sports we host swimming galas, run in local cross-country events, participate in athletics meetings and offer children the chance to play a range of other sports as well. These include handball, fencing, golf and rowing. While we enjoy the occasions when we win, learning how to come second is an equally important lesson. The values of teamwork, practice and effort are central to our coaching. Highlights include:
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION (RE)In RE we assist children to become more aware of themselves and their world, more attuned to the wonders, mysteries and struggles of existence and better able to appreciate what really matters in life. This is carried out through learning about and comparing the major world religions. Highlights include:
MUSICMusic is an integral part of the life of our school. Children are encouraged to appreciate a wide range of musical styles from a variety of different cultures and eras through their music lessons, listening to music in assemblies, within our regular concerts to celebrate the children and also though hearing visiting musicians.  Musical skills are learned through a structured programme that starts in Nursery and continues throughout the year groups. Lessons are delivered by a specialist teacher and provide high quality, skill based learning with a firm emphasis on enjoyment. Singing is an activity which is highly valued. The school sings together daily and children are taught to sing in canon and rounds and are also able to sustain their own part in more complex songs of two or three parts. In addition to class and school musical experiences, there is the opportunity for any child to receive individual instrumental tuition delivered by highly qualified visiting music teachers. There are also many musical extra curricular activities designed to extend the learning of those children with a particular interest in a specific area. We have three lively and full choirs which cater for children from Year 2 up to our more advanced singers in Year 6. We have an orchestra, a clarinet choir, a brass ensemble and a string ensemble. Once the children reach the Prep Years in Years 5 and 6, they have the opportunity to join with some of the ensembles in the Senior School. Highlights include:
GEOGRAPHYThrough Geography, children begin to understand and appreciate the world around them and develop a sense of their own place within it. We make Geography stimulating, purposeful and relevant to our children’s lives. We explore the dynamic relationship between people and the environment on a number of scales; through studying Wellington itself, other contrasting localities within the UK and distant places internationally. Our children develop an appreciation for the uniqueness of place, an understanding of how places are connected and a respect for global diversity. Through the study of geographical themes, children investigate the natural and human processes which impact upon the changing landscape. We aim to promote a sense of wonder at the beauty of the natural world and foster increased environmental awareness to help children understand, sustain and improve the quality of the world in which we live. Highlights include:
HISTORYWe combine the teaching of an extensive range of topics with an advanced development of key skills to develop highly motivated historians with the ability to think critically about evidence. Our lively, multi-media approach to the teaching of History encompasses a carefully prepared combination of resources and activities. These include the use of film, ICT, artefacts, visiting speakers, workshops and stimulating visits to historical sites. Highlights include:
ART AND DESIGNChildren’s creativity and imagination are stimulated through a wide range of activities. Children explore colour, form, shape, texture and pattern using different media and processes. Children are encouraged to use this variety of techniques to express wonder in response to a host of sensory experiences.  Children learn to appreciate and evaluate their own and each other’s creations.  We offer opportunities for children to explore the work of modern and historical artists both locally and globally. Highlights include:
FRENCHFrench is taught from Year 1 and our primary aim is to ensure that children’s first experiences of learning a new language are fun. We want our children to be at ease with different languages and cultures so that they can adapt more readily to change and meet the demands of the modern world.
