Mr Roger Hitchin B.Ed (Hons)
I am delighted to welcome you to the Junior Department at Wellington Junior School. Here the children in Key Stage Two follow the National Curriculum as a core but we are lucky enough to be able to extend and explore far beyond what is available to pupils in the maintained sector and indeed in many of our local independent neighbouring schools.
Children aged between seven and eleven are at their most receptive so time spent at school is very special at this stage. There are so many discoveries to be made and so much to fun to be had in doing so. Young minds are inquisitive and often demanding. As we prepare our children for transfer to the senior school and beyond we need to encourage them to question ideas and to work things out for themselves rather than simply accept everything they are told. What better way to lay a foundation for “learning for life”, as our motto says.
We have a brilliant team of highly qualified and enthusiastic staff (which includes specialist learning support staff) to lead the voyage of discovery and to give each child plenty of encouragement along the way as we promote individual learning in our pursuit of excellence across our very broad curriculum.
As in the Infant Department, our pupils enjoy a “hands-on” experience which includes lots of different activities either in groups or as individuals, both in the classroom and beyond. We give pupils responsibilities as Prefects, Sports Captains and House Captains and enjoy seeing them grow positively into these roles as a way of preparing them to take up responsible positions later in life.
A look at the curriculum guide will give you a better idea of how Wellington Junior School promotes learning in a uniquely practical and vibrant way.
Come and visit us. We would love to show you more of what we get up to at school!
