School have team in National Maths Final

A team of 4 pupils from Wellington School will be competing against teams from across the United Kingdom for this year’s UK Team Maths Challenge trophy.  The team were successful in the Regional Final in March and won the opportunity to compete in the National Final at the Royal Horticultural Halls in London on Monday 21st June 2010.  1450 schools entered the competition and 80 have qualified to take part in the Final.

The team are (from left to right) Alice Cambridge, Alex Jackson, Patrick Greenway and Ruth Aird. They are pictured receiving their certificates at the regioUKMT-Wellington-Team-2010-for-webnal final.

The National Final of the Team Maths Challenge, which is run by the UK Mathematics Trust, involves teams of four pupils from Years 8 and 9, competing in:

  • a group circus – involving practical maths problems;
  • a relay race – a combination of speed across the room and speed at solving maths problems;
  • a mathematical crossword or cross-number with two members of the team working on the across clues and two on the down;
  • a series of head-to-head mini relay races; and
  • a poster competition – designing a poster on a mathematical subject.
