Jessica reaches semi-finals of Open Mic Uk

Jess-for-web2Jess-for-webJessica Handley, year 8, has been given the big thumbs up by judges at the Open Mic UK auditions. Along with other impressive acts, Jessica made it through to the Regional Finals at Cardiff on Saturday 8th October 2011 and performed at the live showcases of Open Mic UK 2011. Jessica got through the auditions singing one of her own songs called My Wish - ‘the judges liked it and put me through. I’ve been writing my own songs since I was 7 years old and one of my initial songs called Nothing was sung at the National Music Festival for Youth. I just love writing and singing music’.  (A link to a sound file of Jessica singing her song My Wish is available to listen to here)

Open Mic UK 2011 is the exciting national talent competition which searches for the UKs best singers, singer/songwriters, rappers and vocalists of all genres who perform either covers or original material.

One contestant who evidently caught the judge’s eye was local talent Jessica Handley, who competed for a place in the National Final at The O2 in London and the chance to grab a breakthrough recording contract. Thousands of hopefuls entered nationwide and hundreds of auditionees queued patiently on the day for their turn to impress the judges. Those who made it through the audition stage took part in a live Regional head to head battle alongside the best talent in their area. They performed in front of hundreds of audience members and a professional judging panel to win a place at the National Grand Final.

Jessica narrowly missed going through to the national finals at the O2 arena. She had a last chance of going through to the semi-finals by a wildcard vote where people who liked Jessica’s singing and songwriting could vote for her by text.  This was successful and she is now busily practising for her performance which will be on 20th November at Hayes, Middlesex. She will perform her own song The Days as well as a cover version of Katy Perry's song Not Like the Movies.
