Past pupil returns to encourage linguists
Joshua House (OWA '08) recently returned to Wellington School to speak to the Year 10 Modern Linguists about the importance of languages in the workplace. A recent graduate of St Andrews University, Joshua read Maths and German and, after a rigorous and highly competitive selection process, is now embarking upon a career with accountancy firm PWC in London, which will involve him working with firms in France and Germany. After giving a presentation on the importance employers place on language skills, Joshua answered questions from MFL staff and the students. What struck the students was the employability of people who have language skills - Joshua said he would not have been offered the job were it not for his German, and he cited examples of friends with similar experiences. Interestingly, Joshua's employers are now asking him to learn French. 'I really wish I hadn't dropped French at the end of Year 9', were Joshua's final words to the group! The photograph shows Joshua with fellow old boy Simon Singh who graduated together this summer.
