Mathematics

The study of Mathematics is creative as well as functional

  • it searches for patterns and helps us to make sense of our world
  • it allows us to evaluate the past and to make informed predictions about the future
  • it encourages logical thinking and elegance of argument.

By such means, Maths is the reliable tool used to solve critical problems in science engineering, finance, business, insurance and medicine.

At the elementary level understanding numbers enables us to make wise decisions when we are shopping. At a more advanced level mathematics underpins decision making in just about every aspect of modern life from architecture to actuarial studies, manufacturing to marketing, PIN numbers to pensions, credit worthiness to computing and investment to insurance

At Wellington, we aim to develop, maintain and stimulate children’s curiosity, interest and enjoyment in mathematics together with enabling them to realise their potential in public examinations. Students in every year group are encouraged to compete in the UK Maths Challenges while exceptionally talented students have the opportunity to compete in Mathematics Olympiads and receive mentoring from University lecturers.

Exams in the Autumn and Summer terms for Years 7 - 9 enable refined setting of pupils so that ability and pace are appropriate for the individual pupil. In Years 10 and 11, pupils are prepared for the IGCSE (Higher) or modular GCSE. The top set in Year 10 take IGCSE in the summer then study Additional Mathematics GCSE in Year 11.

Many pupils choose to continue to study Mathematics in the Sixth Form at either AS or A level. Indeed a significant number of the most able candidates opt to study both Mathematics and Further Mathematics. Whilst in the Sixth Form, students have the opportunity to attend lectures delivered by some of the best University based mathematicians in the UK.

A level Mathematics is a much respected and sought after entry qualification for many University courses. Graduate mathematicians are much in demand in research, education, commerce, industry and the City.
