The Headmaster’s Welcome

 

After seeing Wellington School for the first time, parents and visitors often comment on the welcoming and friendly atmosphere of the School; how the students are calm and at ease with each other and their teachers.  They welcome the opportunity of looking into classrooms and witnessing for themselves young people engaging with their teachers and enjoying their learning.

 

Coming top in Somerset in the 2007 Government GCSE league tables in the percentage of grades A* - C was a great achievement and fitting that it should occur in our final year of taking GCSE Maths and Science before changing to the more rigorous International GCSEs.

 

Yet, although we have a reputation for academic excellence we are not a hot house.  We believe that education should travel far beyond the confines of the syllabus and the classroom.  Minds are opened and spirits enriched by opportunities for sport, the creative and expressive arts and the pursuit of learning in all its diverse forms.  Here we want students to feel sufficiently secure to explore something new, to take a risk or to challenge an idea and to have the space and support to develop their own initiatives.  We hope all will explore the meaning or our motto, Nisi Dominus Frustra, ‘Apart from the Lord, all our labour is in vain’ and begin to discover for themselves who they are, with the responsibilities that entails in a changing world, leaving school equipped for service and leadership.

Martin Reader

Martin Reader was appointed Headmaster of Wellington School in September 2006.  He was awarded an Exhibition at University College Oxford to read English and later took an M.Phil and an MBA.

 

His teaching experience includes St Edward’s School Oxford, Oundle School and Reigate Grammar School where he was Senior Deputy Head.

 

His interests include rugby, athletics and bird watching.  Married to Amanda, they have two young children.
