Latin

LatinThe influence of the Roman world upon so many of our everyday actions is undeniable and the study of Latin, to any level, is vital for an understanding of our true selves.

We follow the Cambridge Latin Course from Year 7, which introduces us to the Romans through their lives in Pompeii, moving on to Britain, Alexandria and Rome.  Linguistic acquisition is rapid and relevant; pupils quickly become familiar with the roots of their own vocabulary and the debts owed to Rome by French, Spanish, German, Italian...  The grammatical and syntactical mechanics of any language are clarified by an appreciation of Latin, from which most are developed.  English spelling even begins to make sense!

By Year 10 we are reading real Latin authors and realising that the Romans had loved, hated and ridiculed all the same things that we do, but arguably with more style.  We take the OCR GCSE (no coursework) and recent years have seen select bands of enthusiasts move on to AS, A2 and Classical courses at a range of universities.
