Year 7 (11+) Admissions

For many, the prospect of leaving the small, safe environment of a Primary or Prep School may seem a little daunting and we want to ensure you have as much information, support and help as possible in making the next step a happy and successful one for your child.

Choosing a school is never easy and very often it is a question of feeling comfortable with the people you meet, getting a “feel” for the place and seeing the way pupils behave. We have a detailed induction programme to ensure a smooth and stress-free transition into the School, including;

We run several exciting Taster Days for Year 6 children interested in joining Year 7 at Wellington.  Children come in a small group and live the life of a Year 7 student for the day; sampling a range of fun lessons, having a delicious lunch in the Dining Hall and taking part in some outdoor and sporting activities.  These taster days will take place in the the Autumn Term 2025.

Taster Days Small groups of children come in together and spend a day in the School, which is a lovely opportunity to make friends, experience some lessons and have fun with pupils who may be starting in Year 7 with them.
Welcome Evening New pupils and parents come for dinner, meet the staff and all the news pupils, who will be starting together.
Pre-season Training Hockey or rugby at the end of the summer holidays.
Induction Day A day in School before the rest of the pupils return.
Overnight Camping Trip All Year 7 pupils and House staff - a bonding exercise early in the term.
Introduction To Year 7 An evening for parents to see how the pastoral system works and to meet tutors.

We encourage a personal service so parents can just pick up the phone or pop in to see us as well as there being a regular round of Parents' Evenings, half termly grades and reports and ongoing contact with your child’s tutor and House Staff.

During the admissions process for Year 7 we ask all candidates to;

1. Provide their most recent set of reports or a reference for each applicant. Schools will be welcome to provide further evidence of each candidate’s interests, abilities and achievement.

2 Complete an online assessment which assesses a range of a skills including English proficiency and non-verbal and quantitative reasoning. It will not be possible to prepare for this test and it will be completed at Wellington School on our assessment day.  We use an external service GL Assessments.

3. Hand write a short piece of no more than 100 words as part of the Entrance Assessment Day in School.

4. Take part in a lovely team-building activity after the assessments, which is a chance to make friends and participate in some fun activities and is observed.

We invite all incoming Year 7 pupils and parents to a relaxed, informal Welcome Evening in the summer, where pupils will meet their House Masters and Mistresses, see the houserooms and have supper.  For the parents, it is a chance to find out the details of the School Day, such as prep, buses, timetables, tutors and uniform. They also have supper and make friends with parents they will be spending the forthcoming years with.

The day before the start of term, pupils are invited in for a day in School to find their way around, settle in, make friends and feel comfortable before the rest of the School returns,

Regular contact with tutors follows in the first weeks and the whole year goes off camping together in week two, so everyone gets to know each other!
