English As An Additional Language

English As An Additional Language

Wellington School welcomes students from overseas with sufficient proficiency in English to enable them to learn effectively in this country.

Provision

Lessons in English as an Additional Language are provided throughout the whole of the Senior School, for those students who could benefit from developing their English for studying in the UK. Students whom we feel could improve their language and study skills are identified by our Initial English Language Assessment at the beginning of the academic year. Lessons in Years 7-11 are generally conducted in small groups or pairs. Occasionally, one-to-one lessons may be appropriate. Lessons take place in the EAL Department. Much of the teaching follows internationally-recognised English Language Examination programmes, such as Cambridge IELTS, PET, KET and First, and where appropriate, students may be helped to prepare to sit these valuable examinations at an authorised centre. Charges are applicable (see information about Fees).

Years 7 and 8

General English Language lessons can be provided in place of a Modern Foreign Language for students working in English as an Additional Language, for students, whose English language level test demonstrates that there is a need. Emphasis is placed on key communication skills, such as Speaking and Listening, although Grammar, Writing and Reading Comprehension skills are essential elements of the programme.

Years 9-11

For students in these year groups, there are English Language and Study Skills lessons provided as part of the timetable for students, whose English language level test demonstrates there is a need. These lessons address General English skills, as well as the necessary Study Skills to enable students to achieve their best from their GCSE studies.

In Years 10 and 11, there is also a two-year iGCSE English as a Second Language course available as an alternative to the first language English Language and Literature iGCSE courses.

Sixth Form

There is a Sixth Form programme of study to prepare students for the IELTS examination enabling them to meet the English Language Entry requirements of UK and overseas universities. These lessons are normally taught 1-1, although group lessons may be more appropriate at our discretion.
