MedVet Society Inspired By Diagnostics Session

Our MedVet Society was delighted to welcome Matthew Harris, Veterinary Clinical Pathologist at IDEXX Laboratories.

With more than twenty years of experience in the veterinary profession including a decade working within the laboratory diagnostics sector, Matthew brought a wealth of knowledge and real-world insight to the session. He provided students with a comprehensive overview of the diverse career pathways, with particular focus on the dynamic and evolving field of Veterinary Pathology. He highlighted the critical role pathology plays in modern diagnostics, bridging the gap between clinical presentation and definitive diagnosis.

He described four engaging, real-life case studies involving animals with a range of injuries and illnesses and students were challenged to think clinically, interpret findings, and consider how cytology and pathology contribute to accurate diagnosis and informed treatment decisions.

Matthew also shared the story of his own varied and inspiring career journey, from working as a farm vet to developing a specialism in diagnostic imaging, before moving into laboratory diagnostics. He spoke about his interest in leadership and business within the veterinary sector, which has led him to pursue an MBA at the University of Exeter.

His experiences illustrated how veterinary careers can evolve in exciting and unexpected directions, combining clinical expertise with innovation, management, and strategic thinking.
