Old Wellingtonian Vet Student Mentors Current Students

We were delighted to welcome Old Wellingtonian, Emily Beacock, to speak to MedVet Soc about “How to Survive Vet School” as part of our programme for National Careers Week.

Emily is currently a Year 5 Veterinary Medicine student at the University of Surrey and generously shared her experiences, insights and advice with our students.

During her talk, Emily spoke about the application process for Veterinary Medicine, including the importance of academic preparation, relevant work experience and demonstrating a genuine commitment to the profession. She gave a realistic and reassuring overview of life at vet school, discussing the academic workload, practical placements and the transition from school to university study.

Emily also shared valuable tips on managing time effectively, staying organised during demanding periods, and looking after wellbeing alongside a busy timetable. Her honest reflections on the challenges of the course, as well as the rewards of studying Veterinary Medicine, were particularly inspiring for those considering a future in the profession.

The session provided an excellent opportunity for students to ask questions and gain first-hand insight into university life and the veterinary pathway. We are extremely grateful to Emily for giving up her time to support our students and for contributing so positively to National Careers Week.
