As part of National Careers Week, our Human Evolution Society hosted Professor Jeremy DeSilva of Dartmouth College, New Hampshire USA.

DeSilva is Professor of Anthropology and a world expert on human evolutionary anatomy specialising in the origins of upright walking. Issy and Sophie of Year 12 interviewed DeSilva about his career starting as a high school science teacher before completing a PhD and forging an academic career at the Ivy League university.

Professor DeSilva highlighted the exciting inter-disciplinary nature of palaeoanthropology, the study of human origins, and listed, among others, geology, ecology, archaeology, chemistry, anatomy and primatology that all contribute to understanding human evolution.  When asked about his passions, he spoke of his latest fieldwork in South Africa, discovering fossils of Homo erectus, but above all, he loves teaching the most!
