The Curriculum

Our curriculum is designed to ensure that students are able to develop the knowledge, skills and competencies needed to thrive in the 21st Century.

In a world that is shifting rapidly, we aim to empower our students to create the future, not just be prepared for it. In order to achieve this, we have developed four principles for the future of education; Embrace complexity, Spark connections, Lead together and Act today.

Year 7 to 9

The curriculum in Year 7-9 is carefully designed to ensure that pupils are able to explore their interests and discover new passions across a broad range of subjects. We appreciate that knowledge and skills do not exist in subject silos, and that in order to solve real life problems, knowledge and skills need to be connected across subjects. Our thematic approach helps to unite common content and encourages pupils to make links between subjects.

Year 7     Identity and Relationships Development Processes
Year 8 The World Around Us Transformation Space and Time
Year 9 Changing Perspectives Patterns and Problem Solving Connections

During their time in the Lower School pupils at Wellington also follow courses in Computer Science and Digital Literacy and AI, as well as specially designed interdisciplinary, project‑based programme that develops pupils’ enquiry, research, and storytelling skills, whilst applying know-how developed through their Digital Literacy and AI lessons, to address real‑world problems.

Years 10 And 11

During the spring and summer term of Year 9 pupils are supported to make their GCSE subject choices. Tutors, subject teachers and Head of Year 9 are on hand to support pupils throughout this process, and all students are offered a one-to-one interview with our Head of Careers, Mrs Bailey.

Most pupils at Wellington will study for GCSE examinations in a total of nine subjects, including a compulsory core curriculum of Mathematics, English Language and English Literature. Pupils usually take two or three of the individual science subjects and a level 2 BTEC in Applied Science is also available. We also recommend that most pupils continue to study a modern foreign language at GCSE as part of a broad and balanced academic curriculum.

Students have a free choice of option subjects, allowing them to tailor the curriculum to reflect their individual passions and interests. This highly individualised approach reflects our commitment to ensuring that every student is able to flourish academically and fulfil their potential.

In addition to their GCSEs, all pupils also follow unexamined courses in Sport and Wellbeing, and in PSHEE.
