National Youth Theatre

We are immensely proud of the 20 students from Wellington School who have gained entry into the prestigious National Youth Theatre over the past five years, following in the footsteps of Old Wellingtonian, Sir David Suchet.

Their remarkable achievement reflects their dedication, talent, and hard work, as well as the outstanding support and guidance provided by our staff. This accomplishment not only highlights their individual potential but also underscores our commitment to nurturing young talent and fostering a thriving artistic community. We look forward to witnessing their continued growth and success in the world of theatre.
Students gain entry through school based auditions. The National Youth Theatre opens doors to world-class training and performance opportunities, and we are delighted to see so many of our students rise to this prestigious challenge.
National Youth Theatre
The National Youth Theatre (NYT) was established in 1956 and is a pioneering organisation in youth arts education. It provides young people aged 14-25 with unique opportunities to engage in professional theatre production and training. Admission into the NYT is highly competitive and is regarded as a significant achievement for any young aspiring actor. Once you gain entry you are a member until the age of 25!
Benefits of being part of the National Youth Theatre Company
One of the primary benefits of being part of the NYT is the comprehensive training it provides. Successful applicants undergo rigorous and high-quality training programs that cover various aspects of theatre. These programs are designed to hone acting skills, develop stagecraft, and improve overall performance abilities. Workshops and masterclasses are led by industry professionals, offering invaluable insights and techniques.
Members of the NYT also get the chance to participate in full-scale theatrical productions, often staged at renowned venues such as the National Theatre, the Royal Court, and the Edinburgh Fringe. These productions are not just amateur performances but are held to professional standards, giving young actors real-world experience in the theatre industry. This hands-on experience is crucial for those looking to pursue a career in acting.
Being part of the National Youth Theatre opens doors to an extensive network of industry contacts. Members have the chance to work with established actors, directors, producers, and other theatre professionals. This networking is invaluable for career development, providing young actors with connections that can lead to future opportunities in theatre, film, and television.
The company has a storied history of producing successful alumni who have gone on to make significant contributions to the arts. Notable alumni include actors such as Daniel Craig, Helen Mirren, and our very own OW Sir David Suchet. The success of its alumni serves as an inspiration and testament to the quality of training and opportunities.
The National Youth Theatre offers an unparalleled platform for young people passionate about theatre. Through its comprehensive training programs, professional production opportunities, and extensive support network, the NYT equips its members with the skills, experience, and confidence needed to succeed in the competitive world of performing arts.
