Reports and Grades

Two full written reports are provided for each student over the course of the academic year, with the exception of pupils in Years 11 and Upper Sixth.

The schedule by year group for these reports is provided in the school calendar. In addition to full reports, students also receive attainment grades on a termly basis and effort grades are awarded every half term.

Attainment Grades Descriptors for Years 7, 8 and 9

9 Exceptional understanding, achievement and quality of work for a student of this age
8 Excellent understanding, achievement and quality of work for a student of this age
7 Very good understanding, achievement and quality of work for a student of this age
6 Good understanding, achievement and quality of work for a student of this age
5 Sound understanding, achievement and quality of work for a student of this age
4 Reasonable understanding, achievement and quality of work for a student of this age
3 Poor understanding, achievement and quality of work for a student of this age
2 Very poor understanding, achievement and quality of work for a student of this age

For students in Years 10 and 11 all attainment grades are GCSE forecast grades.

For students in the Sixth Form all attainment grades are A Level forecast grades.

Effort Grades

The school operates a system of effort grades which allows us to monitor each student’s approach to their learning. Students are graded using a system of + (exceeding expectations), = (meeting expectations) or (failing to meet expectations). These grades are awarded on a half termly basis in two categories, of classwork and homework. When a student in Year 7 - 11 is awarded a minus they will also be set a target for improvement. Students in the Sixth Form will receive an additional comment regardless of the grade awarded. The descriptors for the grades are provided below. However, please note that this is not intended as an exhaustive list, but rather as a set of more general guidelines.

Effort grade descriptors

Classwork

(+) Characteristics demonstrated by pupils who are exceeding expectations may include: 

  • consistently demonstrating outstanding effort
  • always completing work to the very best of their ability
  • regularly showing resilience and determination
  • persevering even when they find the work difficult
  • being exceptionally well motivated
  • taking a consistently committed and focused approach to their studies
  • frequently making thoughtful and insightful contributions to group/class discussions 

(=) A pupil who is meeting expectations:

  • is fully engaged and focused in lessons
  • is well motivated 
  • completes all work to the best of their ability
  • always tries their best
  • brings the required equipment to lessons
  • is polite and respectful at all times

(-) A pupil who is failing to meet expectations may:

  • lack focus in lessons
  • fail to try their best
  • repeatedly fail to bring the required equipment to lessons
  • behave in a rude or disrespectful manner

Homework

(+) Characteristics demonstrated by pupils who are exceeding expectations may include: 

  • consistently demonstrating exceptional effort
  • frequently going ‘above and beyond’ what is expected of them

For those pupils in Years 10 and above this may also include:

  • regularly re-reading notes made in lessons
  • making revision notes
  • completing additional practice exam questions
  • undertaking wider reading

(=) A pupil who is meeting expectations:

  • completes all homework tasks to the best of their ability
  • hands their homework in on time
  • proof reads their written work carefully before handing it in
  • reads and responds to the feedback they are given

(-) A pupil who is failing to meet expectations may:

  • repeatedly fail to hand homework in on time without a valid reason
  • frequently hand in incomplete homework
  • hand in homework that is rushed or lacks effort
