Hinkley Point Families
Hinkley Point Families
We are delighted to be able to welcome French families who are considering Wellington School for their children.Choosing the right school for your child is an incredibly important decision.
You wish to see your child grow in confidence, fulfilment and character. And, of course, you want your child to be happy. Like you, we want the best for your child, and we will do our very best to help your child develop as a happy, curious and kind person.
Wellington is a unique experience. A lack of entitlement, a deep-seated self-belief and the courage to be different are all things that excite us here. We also pride ourselves on a distinctively different mindset…we are a very friendly, down-to-earth, inclusive and ambitious school and we believe that each and every child can act with purpose, inspire others and lead change.
As well as studying the British education curriculum, all French students associated with the Hinkley Point project are able to access CNED provision via FAST Tutoring.
We are delighted to welcome Hinckley Point families at all points in our school:
Nursery & Pre-Prep
We welcome our youngest international students (aged 3) into our dedicated Nursery. Young children are uniquely able to adapt and pick up new languages quickly and all our children are fully integrated and taught together so levels of English are not a concern.
Lively, enquiring minds are encouraged and stretched through first hand practical experience and outstanding teaching, within an environment where effort, good manners, consideration for others and success are recognised and rewarded.
In Pre-Prep and the Prep School (4-11) children study a wide and varied curriculum which might vary slightly depending on level of English.
The Prep School curriculum covers a very broad range of subjects including English, Mathematics, Science, Geography, History, RS, Music, Computing, Art, Spanish, Design Technology, Sport and Wellbeing, PHSE and Outdoor Education. .
Senior School – Age 11-16
Pre-GCSEIn Year 7 (age 11) students transfer to the Senior School, where they embark upon a rich curriculum with a wide range of subjects. In addition to the traditional subjects of English, Mathematics, Sciences, History, Geography and RS, all pupils study French, Spanish and Latin at Year 7.
At Year 8 pupils can take up German. All pupils will also study Music, Art, Drama, Design & Technology and Sport and Wellbeing, as well as PSHEE.
All pupils are taught in a class of around 20 pupils, in which they study all their subjects, with the exception of Mathematics, for which they are set.
During Year 9, decisions are made about GCSE choices. Extensive guidance and counselling is offered to all pupils and parents to ensure the best choices are made for each individual pupil. Staff in all departments are involved with this as each case will be different. Options include Latin and Greek as well as facilitating academic subjects, Music, Art, Drama and Design & Technology.
General English Language lessons are provided in place of a Modern Foreign Language for students working in English as an Additional Language, for students in the Lower School. Emphasis is placed on key communication skills, such as Speaking and Listening, although Grammar, Writing and Reading Comprehension skills are essential elements of the programme.
GCSE
Our Year 10 International pupils aged 14-15 join our mainstream two-year GCSE Programme. Our Year 10 students study a focused programme of important and relevant subjects, study skills, and exam technique. Closely monitored and supported, they work hard to achieve sound GCSE results.
An essential core of subjects ensures a broad education for all students and maintains a wide range of options at A Level. Optional courses, chosen from a selection of traditional subjects, allow students to tailor the curriculum to their own interests.
Most pupils at Wellington School will study a total of 9 subjects at GCSE. All students follow GCSE courses in the core subjects of Mathematics, English Language and English Literature. In addition, students take an unexamined course in Sport and Wellbeing, and in PSHEE.
Students then choose six optional subjects to suit their own interests.
International students with low to intermediate levels of English will follow a reduced GCSE curriculum, supplemented with additional EAL lessons (English as an Additional Language) in Year 10.
One Year GCSE – Personalised Foundation Programme
This programme allows students aged 15 or 16 from outside the UK to complete appropriate courses in Mathematics and English alongside other qualifications which suit your personal interests and goals.
This may include sitting GCSE examinations or completing other qualifications; every student’s journey will be personalised. The Personalised Foundation Programme students are integrated into the full life of Wellington School, providing a perfect preparation for Sixth Form study.
We offer a range of GCSE and IGCSE subjects. All students will have an individualised programme to provide a route to Sixth Form. It is a fully flexible provision which can be moulded to the individual student.
Sixth Form
Our Sixth Form pupils have access to superb modern facilities and outstanding teaching. International Sixth Formers flourish at Wellington. They have a choice of 22 different A Level subjects, including Business, Economics, Art and Music as well as a range of BTEC options.
At Wellington, Sixth Form students are encouraged to build up a strong portfolio of co-curricular experiences such as the Combined Cadet Force, Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme and leadership opportunities. In addition, they will have the option of studying for the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) which is highly regarded by top UK universities.
