Pupil Voice and Action
Pupil Voice and Action
“I believe in creating a school environment where everyone feels valued and accepted regardless of their background or identity.”
Grace - School Captain
At Wellington, we believe that Pupil Voice must come with Pupil Action. We champion the importance of the individual in the community and show it by empowering them to trust their leadership group and deliver change. Our Wellbeing Strategy focuses on creating an explicit sense of belonging, and we strive to ensure that each pupil feels that their voice is heard and makes a difference.
Our pupil voice structure has been recently re-drawn to replicate our political system. Every pupil has their say in small, House based groups. These items are then discussed at House Council, chaired by a House Captain and they decide what they’d like to be considered at School Council. The School Council is made up of our Student Leadership Group of Upper Sixth pupils. They chair formal meetings on a half termly basis to listen to the views of the pupil body and decide how to action them. This might involve lobbying staff for changes, delivering events or creating opportunities through their own work. Whether items are acted on, or not, the Houses then allow the House Captains to feedback to the pupils and to explain decisions made by the School Council. We see our School Council as the Houses of Parliament, made up of MPs and the rest of the pupil body as its constituents. Pupils can also raise issues through anonymous means or in person at any time.
“Representing the student body in school ensures diverse perspectives are heard and addressed, fostering a sense of inclusion and community”.
Jude - School Captain
We challenge our student leaders to show ambition and confidence in driving positive actions. Each leader works closely with senior members of staff as mentors and receives a programme of training to help them act on their ideas.
“As a student body, it is essential that everyone has a voice and believes they are heard in order to create a thriving and inclusive community,”
Fin - Vice Captain
Alongside School and House Council, we have Boarders' Council and an Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity Council. These are chaired by Student Leaders (Boarding and EDI Captains) and they are designed to ensure that we consider the needs of every individual. Our EDI Council was launched in 2024 and has delivered a range of celebrational and educational events.
“Your voice matters. Giving your ideas, your thoughts and your concerns will make a positive impact on the Wellington School community. ”
